Sound Search for Google Play widget, now available on Google Play

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 12 Desember 2012 0 komentar
“What's this song?” Starting today, the Sound Search for Google Play widget is available to download from the Play store, so you can start identifying music playing around you, directly from your Android device’s homescreen.

Sometimes, you hear a song you like while you’re out and about but don’t want to download it right at that moment. The Sound Search widget syncs across all of your devices, so that song you recognized with your phone in the coffee shop can be quickly purchased from your tablet at home.

For devices running Android 4.2, you can add the widget directly to your device’s lockscreen, letting you recognize songs without even unlocking your phone, making it even easier for you to catch that song at the club.

The Sound Search for Google Play widget is available on Google Play for devices in the U.S. running Android 4.0 and above. After you’ve installed it, go to the widget picker and drag the Sound Search widget onto your homescreen. You can click on the widget at any time to start recognizing music around you.

New in Google Currents: Scan through your favorite categories, editions and breaking news

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Keeping up on the news out there can be overwhelming. That's where Google Currents comes in—an app that allows you to discover, share and read your favorite news outlets, blogs and online magazines (what we together refer to as “editions”) on your smartphone or tablet—even when you’re offline. Currents is filled with great editions like The Los Angeles Times, CBS Sports, Android Central, The Guardian, Shortlist, and Forbes. Today, we’re revamping Currents to make it even easier to scan through all your favorite categories and specific editions with just the swipe of a finger. And, we’re using some of the technology behind Search to bring you breaking stories on those celebrity scandals, that fiscal cliff negotiation or hottest holiday gift.

Scan through categories

We’re now grouping editions into categories to help you keep track of your existing subscriptions and discover new ones. Check out editions related to your interests through categories like Entertainment, Sports, Lifestyle and more. All of your content will be grouped in these categories, accessible from a sidebar. And you can organize your editions in each category with favorites on top.

We’ve also made it easy to quickly browse through top articles from all your favorite editions in a category—just swipe horizontally. If you subscribe to more than a dozen News editions like The Atlantic, ABC News and The Telegraph, you can quickly swipe through the entire category and dive into editions with articles of interest.

Scan through editions

We’ve also made it easier to scan headlines in a particular edition—just swipe vertically. Want to see what’s new in Popular Science? Just swipe through through the headlines. After you view a story we’ll mark it as read, so it’s easier to see new content each time you use Currents.

Scan through breaking stories

To help you stay up-to-date with the latest news, Google Currents now uses some of the technology behind Search to deliver the hottest breaking stories in categories such as World, Entertainment, Sports, Science and more. You’ll find new articles from hot topics that interest you, while discovering existing Currents editions you can subscribe to. Breaking stories are customized to your country and language—so we’ll only show you relevant news.

Currents optimizes editions to look great on whatever type of device you're using. Now articles shine, with larger images and layouts that are intelligently optimized for your device, whether you're on a phone or a tablet. Check out some of our newest featured partners like Cars.com, Voice of America News and New Scientist.

Back in April we expanded Google Currents internationally. Since then millions of readers around the world have downloaded Currents, reading over 700 publisher editions and tens of thousands of self-produced editions. The updated app is now available for download on Google Play and coming soon to iOS. We hope that today’s updates make keeping up with the latest news fast, easy and fun no matter where you are or what device you’re using.

New Google Now: the perfect travel companion for the holidays

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 05 Desember 2012 0 komentar
Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen! For Santa’s holiday travel this season, Google Now is just the prescription.

As you head off this holiday season, the latest update to Google Now makes it even more useful for traveling. Before you even leave your house, Google Now will tell you what the weather will be like at your destination (just in time to make sure you remember to pack those mittens). At the airport, your boarding pass is automatically pulled up, helping you breeze through to the gate (launching shortly for United Airlines, with more to come). And once you've arrived at your destination, Google Now can help you uncover some great activities, by showing you events happening around you, suggesting websites for you to explore as you research things to do, or allowing you to learn more about specific pieces while you’re at a museum (using Google Goggles).

All of this builds on top of some of the other cards designed for travel, like the currency conversion, translation, and flight status cards -- hopefully taking a little bit of the stress out of holiday travel so you can focus on family and fun.

We're also making Voice Search even more powerful: you can find out the name of the song that’s playing (“What’s this song?”), quickly find product info (“Scan this barcode”) and post updates to Google+ simply by using just your voice.

These goodies are waiting for you in the updated Google Search app, available on Google Play for devices running Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, or higher.

Nexus: The best of Google, now in three sizes

Posted by Unknown Senin, 29 Oktober 2012 0 komentar
People increasingly have more than one device, and they switch between
them many times a day. Nexus—Google’s hardware line for Android
devices—gets rid of the hassle. Just sign in with your Google Account
and everything is there ready to go, whatever device you’re using:
photos, emails, contacts, bookmarks, even your entertainment on Google
Play.

Today, we’re excited to announce three great new Nexus devices … in
small, medium and large. And they all run Android 4.2, a new flavor of
Jelly Bean—which includes the latest version of Google Now and other
great new features.

Nexus 4 with Google Now and Photo Sphere

Nexus 4 is our latest smartphone, developed together with LG. It has a
quad-core processor which means it's super fast, a crisp 4.7" (320
ppi) display that's perfect for looking at photos and watching
YouTube, and with wireless charging you just set the phone down on a
charging surface to power it up, no wires needed. While Nexus 4 is
incredibly powerful under the hood, it also features the latest
version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.2—the simplest and smartest version
of Android yet.

Starting with the camera, we've reinvented the photo experience with
Photo Sphere, which lets you capture images that are literally larger
than life. Snap shots up, down and in every direction to create
stunning 360-degree immersive experiences that you can share on
Google+ with friends and family—or you can add your Photo Sphere to
Google Maps for the world to see.

Android 4.2 brings other great goodies like Gesture Typing, which lets
you glide your finger over the letters you want to type on the
keyboard—it makes typing fast, fun and a whole lot simpler. Android 4.2 also adds support for wireless display so you can wirelessly watch movies, YouTube videos and play games right on your Miracast-compatible HDTV.

Learn more about all of the new features in Android 4.2, Jelly Bean, here

Google Now—even more useful

We designed Google Now to make life simpler by giving you the right
information at just the right time in easy to read cards, before you
even ask. And the feedback has been awesome. So today we’re adding
more cards that we hope you’ll find useful. Flight information,
restaurant reservations, hotel confirmations and shipping details—how
often have you found yourself wading through your email to get this
information at the last moment? So next time you book a table for
dinner, you’ll get a reminder with all the details without ever having
to lift a finger. You’ll also get cards for nearby attractions,
interesting photo spots, movies times at nearby theaters or concerts
by your favorite artists.

Nexus 7: Thin, light and now even more portable

Nexus 7 brings you the best of Google–YouTube, Chrome, Gmail, Maps–and
all the great content from Google Play in a slim, portable package
that fits perfectly in your hand. To give you more room for all that
great content you can now get Nexus 7 with 16GB ($199) or 32GB ($249)
of storage. But we also wanted to make this highly portable tablet
even more mobile. So we added HSPA+ mobile data. Nexus 7 is now also
available with 32GB and HSPA+ mobile ($299), which can operate on more
than 200 GSM providers worldwide, including AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.

Nexus 10: Powerful and shareable

Nexus 10 is the ultimate tablet for watching movies or reading
magazines. We wanted to build a premium entertainment device, so we
partnered with Samsung to do just that. Nexus 10 is the highest
resolution tablet on the planet with a 10.055" display at 2560-by-1600 (300ppi), that's over
4 million pixels right in your hands. It comes with a powerful battery
that will get you up to nine hours of video playback and more than 500
hours of standby time. With a set of front-facing stereo speakers, you
can watch movies right from your Nexus 10 and they simply sound
awesome.

But what makes Nexus 10 unique is that it's the first truly shareable
tablet. With Android 4.2, you can add multiple users and switch
between them instantly right from the lockscreen. We believe that
everyone should have quick and easy access to their own stuff --
email, apps, bookmarks, and more. That way, everyone can have their
own home screens, their own music, and even their own high scores.

Google Play: More entertainment, more countries

We’ve recently added a ton of great new entertainment to Google Play, such as movies and TV shows from Twentieth Century Fox. Earlier this year we expanded our service beyond movie rentals and now you can purchase movies and build a library of your favorites in Google Play. Today we’re bringing movie purchasing to more countries - Canada, the U.K., France, Spain and Australia.

We’re also excited to announce two new partnerships. We’re now working with Time, Inc. to bring you even more magazines like InStyle, PEOPLE, TIME and others. And we’ve partnered with Warner Music Group who will be adding their full music catalog with new songs coming each day. We’re now working with all of the major record labels globally, and all the major U.S. magazine publishers, as well as many independent labels, artists and publishers.

On November 13, we're bringing music on Google Play to Europe.  Those of you in the U.K, France, Germany, Italy and Spain will be able to purchase music from the Google Play store and add up to 20,000 songs—for free—from your existing collection to the cloud for streaming to your Android devices or web browser. We’re also launching our new matching feature to streamline the process of uploading your personal music to Google Play. We’ll scan your music collection and any song we match against the Google Play catalog will be automatically added to your online library without needing to upload it, saving you time. This will be available in Europe at launch on November 13 and is coming to the U.S. soon after. This will all be for free—free storage of your music, free matching, free syncing across your devices and free listening.

Great value

We’ve always focused on building great devices at great value.  And we think today’s devices offer the very best that money can buy. Here are more details on when and where you can pick up your next Nexus device:

  • Nexus 4: 8GB for $299; 16GB for $349; available unlocked and without a contract on 11/13 on the Google Play store in U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Canada. The 16GB version will also be available through T-Mobile for $199, with a 2-year contract (check here for more details).

  • Nexus 7: 16GB for $199 and 32GB for $249; available in U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan, and also through our retail partners Gamestop, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples and Walmart.

  • Nexus 10: 16GB for $399; 32GB for $499; available on 11/13 in the Google Play Store in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan. You'll also be able to purchase the 32GB version in over 2,000 Walmart stores in the U.S.

A Nexus device is much more than simply a phone or tablet. It’s your connection to the best of Google—all of your stuff and entertainment, everywhere you go with no hassle.  Now you have three new Nexus devices, a new improved version of Jelly Bean and more entertainment than ever before—all available on Google Play. The playground is open.

Bringing Google Calendar to the Play Store

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 17 Oktober 2012 0 komentar

Previously available only on select Android devices like Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, you can now download the official Google Calendar app for Android from Google Play. Google Calendar makes it easy for you to manage all your calendars in one place, including those from your Google accounts and other calendars synced to your Android device.

Beyond supporting the basics such as creating, editing, deleting events and responding to invitations, the new Google Calendar app has extra features that help you manage your time and communication more easily:

  • Snooze events directly from a notification if you’re not quite ready and want to be reminded later.

  • Use predefined messages to send quick "I'll be late" updates to your event participants directly from the notifications or the event itself (of course, you can always write your own).

  • Pinch to zoom in and out of a day.

  • Set a home time zone to help you manage your time better when traveling.

In addition, we also expanded the sync period so you can review past events from up to one year ago directly on your device.

Download Google Calendar on Google Play today for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3+) or Jellybean. Use the Google Feedback feature in the app to let us know how we can make Calendar work better for you!

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 26 September 2012 0 komentar
Whether you’re looking for directions, checking email or sharing a picture with friends, apps are now an indispensable part of life. And if you’re using Android, it all starts with Google Play, home to 675,000 apps and games. That’s a lot of choice. We’ve now crossed 25 billion downloads from Google Play, and to celebrate we’re offering some great discounts for the next five days.

Every day you’ll be able to choose from a collection of apps from some of the world’s top developers including Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, runtastic, Full Fat and more. And all for just 25 cents. We’ll also be offering some special collections like 25 movies you must own, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and our 25 top selling magazines, all at special prices. Visit Google Play a little later today to check them out.

Twenty-five billion is more than twice the distance, in miles, that the Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled since its launch 35 years ago. It’s the amount of time, in minutes, that have passed since some of our earliest ancestors began to set foot in Europe. And now, thanks to all of you, it’s a Google Play milestone. We look forward to the next 25 billion.

Getting the most out of your smartphone camera

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 18 September 2012 0 komentar
In todays smartphone wars there is a better camera phone coming out on a monthly basis. We are continuously hearing about phones with more megapixels, better lenses and deeper colors. However, you can get brilliant pictures out of your current camera phone too by following the golden rule of 'Manual Settings.' In times where DSLR cameras are replacing digicams and everyone is a budding photographer the one camera that is being ignored is the one always in your pocket, by applying a 10th of your knowledge of manual setting you can get brilliant images on your phone. However, the scope of this article is Android camera settings as the iphone does not let you configure manual settings, while the iphone can get great picture quality most of the times with the auto configured camera but with these manual settings on Android you will be surprised byhow AWESOME your 5 megapixel camera can be :)

Clicked on my Galaxy Nexus

The settings below are as reflected on the SAMSUNG GALAXY NEXUS running on Android 4.01 Jelly Bean, the setting may wary on other Android Phones.

1. WHITE BALANCE
This is one setting that can completely change the tone and colors of your photograph. By default it is set at AUTO which is the  phone’s best judgment to take the photo. The flash will go off depending on the situation, the shutter might go faster or slower, and the sensitivity of the sensor might change. Most users never change this setting and this is the biggest reason why the quality of your photos drops.

Below, is an explanation of the various modes available under White Balance and how to use them :-

a) INCANDESCENT: This is the mode that you should be using when your indoors and the dominant light in the room is yellow light being emitted by light bulbs. Switching to this mode will help your phone camera accordingly adjust to the surroundings for more natural colors.

b) DAYLIGHT: The name here is self explanatory, this mode works best when your clicking pictures outdoors in the day. The camera captures the most natural outdoor colors in this mode, you can get really good shots using this.

c) FLUORESCENT: We spoke about yellow light from bulbs in the first mode above. This mode is for a setting which has more white light, the kind that is emitted from tube lights or CFLs. Changing your camera to this mode will help it adapt to its white light surroundings and capture shots that make most of the white light.

d) CLOUDY: Rainy, dark cloudy days have a charm of their own, you can capture beautiful shots by switching your phone camera to this mode, it also works best for most evening shots just before the sun sets.

2. EXPOSURE

This is a setting that most new DSLR users love to play with, it helps you control the amount of light that falls on your camera lens accordingly making your picture brighter on darker. This setting is more complex and advanced on DSLRs but on your phone you can change it in one click. You can increase or decrease the exposure by upto 3 levels on your jelly bean phone. This setting is very useful for shots with low light where you do not want to use flash but want a more natural click, just increase the exposure to the amount that works best for your shot and capture the perfect non flash shot :-)

3. SCENE MODE

This setting helps your camera determine what surroundings are you in, it could be a party or enjoying a sunset at the beach. Just let your camera know where you are and it accordingly adapts.

a) AUTO: Most people leave this setting unchanged on their phones and it works fine as your phone automatically adapts to your surroundings, but just like manual setting do the magic in DSLR changing this setting can dramatically improve your shots.
Clicked on my Galaxy Nexus

b) ACTION: This mode is useful when you are clicking pictures of moving objects. It may be a running child, moving car or a football game. Changing your camera to this mode will help it understand that your trying to capture a moving object.

c) NIGHT: Again self explanatory, the GALAXY NEXUS has a camera optimized for low light photography and changing to this mode will give you really nice night shots.

d SUNSET: This is the mode to be in while strolling along a beach after a long day at work, it helps captures the last strokes of light as the sun sets far into the ocean .

e) PARTY: This mode is optimized for parties with a lot of disco lights throwing colors all around. Try it in your next night out :)

NOTE: 'SCENE MODE' AND 'WHITE BALANCE' CANNOT BE USED IN COMBINATION, CHANGING ONE WILL BLOCK YOU FROM CHANGING THE OTHER, USE AS PER YOUR JUDGEMENT AND LIGHT CONDITIONS.

Lastly use flash wisely. Personally I hate pictures with flash and avoid using it whenever possible. With the manual settings explained above you can get beautiful shots without flash.

Android Apps for Indians

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 24 Mei 2012 0 komentar

Since the arrival of Android and the launch of budget handsets in India there has been rapid development of apps by Indian companies designed for Android users in India. This post is a documentation of the apps that I use on a regular basis and might be useful both for Indian's living in India or abroad. The app vary across different types from movies, navigation to ordering food from your phone.

All the apps mentioned in this post are FREE apart from the map my india app :-

MUSIC

Listening to music on the cloud is one of the best inventions to have ever happened. The process of manually downloading and then transferring music to the phone is too cumbersome and I end up not doing it most of the time. The apps mentioned below have helped address this problem as they not only provide a repository of all the music you will every need but also have a section of weekly top hits to keep you updated with the latest in music.

Saavn: This is one app that I use almost everyday on my commute to work. Saavn gives me the latest of all hindi music in its weekly top hits, it also has a section on Tamil songs for those interested. It also has a good repository of older songs that you may want to listen to and can be found through the search box in the app.

Dhingana: A close competitor to Saavn, Dhingana also has a list of all the the latest in Hindi music. This app beautifully follows the overall ICS layout of swiping left and right and a swipe to the left or right can show you playlists or New releases.  It also has a social aspect and shows the number of likes that a song or album has got.

MOVIES

Given the fact that India is a big market for entertainment , especially movies so geting an app to book your weekend movie fix was bound to happen. Now only if we could have a social layer that gives you reviews of movies by your friends :)

PVR: The leader in the multiplex space in India now also offers you the convenience to not only browse movie show timings and locations on your mobile but it also lets you book tickets on it. No more rushing to switch on your computer to book tickets for your favorite movie :)

DT: A close competitor to DT is also competing with them in the all important mobile space. You can use the DT app to do everything that the PVR app does and book tickets on the go. No more going through book my show to book your tickets.

FOOD

Dominos: Have you ever wanted to get pass the rehearsed lines that domino's pizza greets you with and dreamt of ordering a pizza without them trying to up sell you everything from extra cheese to choco lava cake (okay, the choco lava cake is a good upsell :) Dominos India now has their very own Android app that can be used to order pizza from the convenience of your phone and a simple few actions on your screen. So go ahead order that Pizza you have been craving :)

NAVIGATION

Map my India for Android: Your Android phone comes built in with Google maps, however for those who want a little extra and want to save on buying that GPS navigation system should buy the map my india app for Android. This app is not available on Google play, but can be directly downloaded from their website and is sold at a price of Rs 1990. A big saving as compared to buying their GPS device. The directions provided in this app are very accurate and this is the same software that is used in their GPS device. The only downside is that this app consumes a lot of battery and you would need a car charger connected while using it.

NEWS

TOI: India's most read English newspaper (The Times of India) was quick to create an app for Android users that works great on all Android handsets. The App neatly consolidates the latest headlines for you across different sections and gets regular updates from the TOI website. The design is clean and articles can be viewed in full screen mode which provides a white background and text/pictures on it, this UI make reading a pleasure on the go. The App also has a section that shows news from all the major metros in India and you can choose the one of your choice.  A must have app to stay in touch with whats happening in the country whether living in India or abroad.

NDTV: A close competitor to the TOI app with a similar reading experience. The one feature that distinguishes this app from others is the live radio feature, which can be used to listen to all the latest news while on the go. Useful when your on the move and don't want to strain your eyes reading.

Currents: While the top publications have individual apps, most others can be found in a mobile friendly format on Google currents. I read Hindustan times, Mint and IBN live on Google Currents. Personally I prefer the layout that Mint offers as the news is clearly divided into sections along with relevant pictures and articles. This app is great for offline reading too as the news is cached to read at your convenience.

AIRLINE:

Indigo: With the airline industry going through bad times in India, there is one airline that is emerging as a clear winner - Indigo. They are an innovative company and are possibly the only Indian airline with an Android app. the Indigo app is a pleasure to use and has the capability to book tickets or to just browse through their inflight food menu before your flight. You can also use it to check in and block seats for your next flight. A very useful app to book tickets for that imprompto vacation or check whats on the fodo menu while at the airport. Must have for the frequent traveller.

What are your favorite android apps in India? Please leave your comments below.

Ainol Novo 7 Aurora Review

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 28 April 2012 0 komentar

Best Apps for Android Tablets

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 26 April 2012 0 komentar
The iPad is considered to be the leader in the tablet space. While I really like the iPad and think its a great device - very good hardware and a nice collection of apps customized for the tablet user. However, I chose to use the Motorolla xoom as my primary tablet - the reason being that I consume a lot of video on my tablet and the xooms 10.1 inch screen is ideal for watching videos vs the iPads screen which seems to be better for reading. That being said the xoom is not far behind even on the reading front and is catching up fast with developers slowly porting tablet apps on Android. The post below is a consolidation of my favorite apps for Android Tablets that can be helpful for new or old tablet users  :-

READING APPS

1. CNN for Android Tablets - Maybe one of the best apps available for Android tablets, it looks a lot like its iPad counterpart and  may outperform it in some areas. This app is designed for tablets and takes advantage of the larger screen that these devices offer. It offers news from all over the world and gives you the option to consume video or read through the news. A MUST HAVE APP FOR YOUR ANDROID TABLET.

2. Pulse News reader: In todays day and age we all consume news from multiple sources and RSS feeds have become life savers. Personally I like to get my news aggregated from techcrunch, all things digital, Gizmodo and venture beat.  Pulse news reader displays news from all your feeds in a beautiful UI that updates automatically and provides you with your personalized news digest served fresh daily, hourly or whatever setting you may like. You can also create different tabs to see news from varied topics like tech, home etc.

3. Google Currents: Reading the web like a magazine has always been a dream. With Google Currents the dream become's reality and you get your favorite websites in a magazine format. With this app you can add your favorite websites and it will show their updated content in a magazine format which you can read at your convenience. The best part is that you can also use this app when your offline, perfect to catch up on reading while your on the plane.

VIDEO

1. MX VIDEO PLAYER: If you are an iPad user then you know the pain of converting your videos to .mp4 before they run on your device or putting a paid app to run other formats and then going through the complicated process of transferring files to your ipad via itunes using the transfer option from within the apps section. With Android the only thing you need to install is the MX Video player free app and all your videos(.MKV, .AVI, .MPEG)  will play on your Android tablet. Its a super powerful app and has a variety of codes to support all your video needs. A must have for your Android Tablet.

2. YouTube: The Youtube app on Android is light years ahead of its iOS counterpart. It has a beautiful curved wall view of all your videos or the most popular one's whichever one you choose. You can also choose to a view for your account and see videos divided by your subscribed channel. One of the best ways to consume videos from the most popular Video site in the world.

VIDEO CALLING

One of the advantages of a tablet is instant access to a video call and quick connection to your family and friends. While Apple does offer this via Facetime, however the limitation is that the other person also has to be using an apple device. Here are some Android apps that make video calling a brilliant experience :-

Gtalk: This app comes pre installed on all Android tablets and can be used to instantly connect with your friends/family who are also using Gtalk on any other device with a webcam. The flexibility of using gtalk across devices is a big plus.

Hangouts: As video calling technology advances, its not only about connecting with one friend but by talking to different friends spread across the globe. With hangouts on an Android tablet you can connect to up to 9 friends at the same time.

Skype: Skype is also a popular platform for video calling and is available on Android too. This app is across platform and can be used on your Android phone/tablet, iphone or ipad. Gets the job done well if your a Skype fan.

OTHERS

1. HD Widgets: The joy of Android is the ability to customize and add your own widgets that make your tab personalized just the way you like it.  HD widgets has options specifically designed for tablets that fit the full screen and add beauty to your screen. This it the only paid app featured in this post and costs about $2 but is totally worth it.

2. Chrome: You love browsing the web on the fastest browser on your computer now its also available on your Android tablet. With Chrome for Android your life is always in sync it not only syncs all your bookmarks but it also all the tabs that you had open on your computer. Just leave anything on your computer and continue on the same from your tablet as all tabs are synced for you just the way you left it. The Internet synced for you. ALWAYS.

Iris - AI for Android a.k.a Siri for Android

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 18 April 2012 0 komentar

Iris is a great app for all Android phones and it does everything that Siri does on an iphone 4s (well almost , it can't set your alarm yet :-) However, its a great user experience and given the fact that Android has better voice recognition skills. (The voice action technology used in this app can be configured to use the default Android voice recognition while answers are powered by Chacha which has an excellent database.) Apple fans might not like the Siri rip off but as Steve jobs once said "Good artists copy but great artists steal."

I've been using Iris for about 6 months now and its great to use to check the weather, do a quick search or check for unread messages - it gets these task done really well and displays them on a beautiful UI within the app. Most of these things are possible through the Google search box on any Android phone but Iris displays it in a different UI, satisfying your desire for a personal assistant on your phone. While most people would only use this feature while showing off features to their friends, but it is useful when your in a quiet environment and too lazy to type. I often use it to find out meanings Eg: {What is the meaning of kleptomania?} or to quickly compose an email - [Send email to < recipient name>]. Iris can be incredibly useful based on how much of a fan you are of AI, the best part being that you can try it on a cheap $200 Android phone as compared to buying a $800 iphone. Below, is a video from Youtube comparing Iris to Siri - watch it to find out the winner :-)

Acer Iconia 7 inch Tablet

Posted by Unknown Senin, 09 April 2012 0 komentar

We got our hands on a new Acer Iconia 7 inch Tablet. It ships with Android 3.2 honey comb, has front and rear Cameras, GPS, a microSD car slot for extra storage, 8 gigs of internal memory, blue tooth, wifi, HDMI and mini USB 2 port. The display is a 7-inch Multi-Touch capacitive screen, with 1024 x 600 resolution. The processor is a Nvidia® Tegra 2 Dual Core, running at 1 GHZ. Battery life is about 4 and a half hours.

What we liked:
The tablet seems very speedy, the small form factor is nice, and the multi-touch display is very responsive and clear. The built in rear-facing camera is 5 megapixels with an LED flash that comes on in dim light (photos are fine but don't expect DSLR quality). Taking photos with the tablet does not seem as awkward or as ridiculous as with the bigger screen ones. The built-in microphone is very responsive when calling up your favorite websites (hands free, no typing!). The built in GPS is useful for car, walking or bike travel. Overall we found the tablet very easy to use. The fit and finish is very high quality, typical Acer. The included microSD card slot allows cards up to 32 gigs, making it a very versatile content player (you can load up with eBooks, PDF documents, movies, music and videos; as well as Apps). The front facing camera is a 2 megapixel, perfect for Skype video calling. We did not get a chance to test the mini USB 2 port, but apparently, it can take thumb drives and USB media readers.

What we didn't liked:
At a retail price of about $259-$280, it cost more than our favorite cheapie tablet, the iview 760TPC (see our review on the site), and also more than the Kindle Fire. It is about $100 dollars cheaper than the ipad2 as of this writing; making it a little hard to choose if you are torn between size, capability, functionality and price. Battery life is somewhat meager, averaging about 4 and a half hours per charge. Daily charging is probably a must, sometimes you might have to charge at home and at work for your commute return. For it's size the tablet is a bit on the heavy side.

Conclusion:
Overall, we loved the speediness of the tablet, the fit and finish is excellent, it's a quality made product. The tablet feels responsive and quick for most tasks. Most games and apps run without issues. The built in GPS works great. And the built in 2 cameras work terrifically well. This tablet is perfect for those who do not want a big full size tablet and want something with more flexibility than the Kindle Fire. The tablet works right out of the box without any tech requirements or updates. Our favorite function is the ability to recall web searches by speaking into the built in microphone, it basically eliminates the need to type your searches.

iView 760TPC Tablet Review

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

This is my initial review of the iview 760TPC android 7" tablet. In looking for the right tablet I went about figuring out what I would use one for. I have used an ipod touch first generation to watch movies, listen to music and play some games during my long commute to work. I do not use it to read books since I find the screen too small for that. It is fine as a pocket portable computer. Since the battery started to go, I decided to get something bigger in screen size. I do not exactly like having to constantly use itunes to load content on this device; it’s basically a very cumbersome process. I tried the Sony PSP as you can tell by my recent review of that experience, but I was disappointed that it's not really good for reading things such as PDF books. Also, it does not connect to my home network well, and watching movies on it is uncomfortable since you can easily hit a key and it goes haywire. I will still use it to play games.
Since I consider the ipad the Rolls Royce of tablets I made it a point not to get one just yet. I like to do things the hard way as a true wannabe tech geek, I guess. I have played with both the ipad2 as well as the Kindle Fire. The ipad 2 is just great, but I did not see myself carrying this rather large tablet on the train, as well as spending $500 plus for something that could easily get damaged (I would be on pins and needles everyday). The Kindle Fire is nice, but I found it quite limiting in storage and other content options. The first time I played with one, my friend Paul had very little content in it, and it seems he had some trouble getting it to play netflix, streaming smoothly from his home network.
I had heard that android tablets were not that great, my brother got the HP tablet $99 deal, but I heard that even though you can load android on that, it’s an obsolete kind of device, and I did not find one for $99.
I was extremely and pleasantly surprised when my friend Phil dropped by and gave me a great tip. It seems that there were these tablets coming out that were below $200 that work pretty well and came with the latest android OS. The only problem: They were being sold in China. I just recently had a bad experience with a package from China, the product came crushed because of the inadequate, thin, bubble wrap, and good luck trying to get a refund; just shipping it back will cost you a fortune.
As luck would have it, good all newegg was having a sale on this thing, and after reading the great reviews I jumped in and bought one. For around $130 bucks; as my friend Mr. Nero says: “How could you go wrong”!

Let’s get down to the goods:
-       It’s a 7” TFT Capacitive Touch Screen (it’s multi touch but don’t expected it to be like the ipad)
-       The resolution is 800x400 (it’s not a retina display, but it can play HD files and those look fantastic)
-       512 MB of memory and 8 gigs of hardrive space
-       It can take micro SD cards up to 32GB (beats both the ipad and the Fire)
-       Comes with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) but you can upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) version 4
-       802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN
-       2 lbs.
-       7.5" x 4.75" x 0.50"
-       It has a pretty fast processor
-       Battery life (after you tweak it a bit) is about 5-6 hours
-       3D performance is good
-  2 megapixel camera (you can make skype video calls)
-       Precise accelerometer (for the racing games)
-       Rooted Android (which means you can go to the android market and get a bunch of apps, mostly FREE, including all the angry bird games, and you can “home brew it” adding a lot of functionality)

In a nutshell, after testing it for a few days and adding all the tips and tricks and adjustments (like disabling the telephony apps for better battery life, updating to the latest android market and installing superuser and file browser), I can say the following:
It's probably not as easy to set up and use as an ipad or Kindle, but if you get it and do the little required work on it, you will be handsomely rewarded with a great little device.

It plays all the video files you can think of, you can read ebooks, PDF books and news and info from the web. Angry birds plays really well. You can also play all those newer games that would choke my old first gen ipod touch.
Since it comes with a mini USB and a mini HDMI port, you can hook it up to a HD big TV, add a mouse and keyboard and use it as a stand-alone computer. That alone is worth more that the $130. Since you go through HDMI you get both sound and video with no quality loss. Your 1080p HD video will look like 1080p HD video. The Android market and the Android apps are pretty good (you can get a lot more on the ipad, true). You can also get apps from Amazon android store, but why bother?
Since it has wifi you can check and reply to your emails, and also do some word processing and spread sheets with the included office apps.
You can watch utube videos and you can watch any flash based content on the web. Hulu restricts you to HULU plus, bummer.
When comparing it to the ipad, the ipad is way better (but not as flexible), but you pay a lot more and it is also bigger and heavier. I find the 7-inch size very nice for travel. When comparing it to the Kindle Fire, no contest, I would get this. The Kindle fire does seem to be a bit faster since it has a faster processor, but this it a heck of a lot more flexible and it offers unlimited storage through micro SD. I have heard that when you load ICS the performance is way better, but I’m not up to that point yet. I will continue to test and enjoy this wonderful product. In future posts, I will recommend some apps and games as well as tell you about any cons I find. So far, I’m amazed about what this cheapie tablet can do. For the money it's a steal! Did I mention it comes with a free leather case? And I left my plastic protector on, so FREE screen protector as well, thanks to my friend Tim for that tip plus the help of my trusty exacto knife and a piece of thick plastic under the included screen protector, cutting it down so the buttons would not be covered.
You can buy this tablet at newegg here:
